Bella, BSN, RN, is a registered nurse in the clinical care unit and nursing residency program at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center.
Registered Nurse Bella knew she wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps to become a nurse. With the help of mentors, Bella shares she is grateful for those who inspired her and shaped her into the nurse she is today.
What or who inspired you to become a nurse?
Bella says, “I believe my mom was my inspiration to go into a career in healthcare. She worked in the clinical setting. My mom was my inspiration because she worked in the clinical care setting bedside as a nurse for the entirety of her career. Hearing her stories were inspiring, how she made a difference in her patients’ lives and I knew I wanted to follow in her steps.”
When did you decide to pursue your career?
“My path to a career in healthcare started when I went to pursue my BSN and then I found the residency nurse program here at Shady Grove, found mentors that brought me into the hospital and shaped me into the nurse that I am today.”
Do you have any advice for others starting their career?
“Seeking out mentorship programs are great to start your career in health care. It provided me with the support that I needed to become the nurse I am today and to remember to prioritize your own health because you are taking care of people every single day. We need to take care of ourselves too.”
What does a typical day look like for you?
“A typical day: I’ll come in and I’ll get my assignment. I like to come in early and look up my patients so I have the knowledge I need to take care of them best. Throughout the day, you’re collaborating with the health care team to create individualized care plan for them.”
What’s your favorite part of your day?
“Every single day is rewarding. I know my favorite part is being able to discharge my patients. It’s the absolute most rewarding part. You know, you get to be there when they’re most vulnerable and then get them home when they’re healthy again.”
The Maryland health care campaign JoinMdHealth focuses on three icons: head, hands, and heart. What do you lead with?
“I get to, you know, be a part of direct patient care, so I’m hands-on using my clinical skills every day. But you’re also using your social skills, so you’re communicating with patients and their family members. You get to educate them, advocate for them, and collaborate with the health care team to build their individualized health care plan.”
