Evan, an advanced clinical nurse at Johns Hopkins Bayview in the emergency department.
“What I like most about the ED is it’s a bit like working in organized chaos, whether you’re gonna be in triage, the trauma room, or at three or four to one nursing assignments where you just get to do full patient care, hands-on, or you can be the float nurse or the charge nurse. And kind of get a variety of tasks.
It’s built-in teamwork, and everyone kinda knows what we’re up against. And so, to help each other out with that teamwork, to prep the best patient care that we can.
I started 13 years ago as a summer nurse extern. I stayed on as a patient care tech for the next year, until I finished nursing school. And then when I finished nursing school and passed my NCLEX, I started as a new grad nurse in the emergency room here.
I can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather work; I’m a firm believer that the grass is greener where you water it.
The balance of this role allows me to be hourly; that way, when I leave work, I leave work.
