5 Interview Tips for Health Care Professionals
You applied for a position you really want, and you’ve landed an interview. Congratulations! Here are five tips to help you nail the interview along with some strategies to help you stand out among the other interviewees.
JoinMdHealth and the experts at the Maryland Healthcare Education Institute (MHEI) share some quick tips to help you best present yourself and nail the interview:
- Don’t dominate the conversation or provide unnecessary details. Practice speaking and saying some of your positive experiences, skills, and relevant answers that the interviewer might ask. When you’re practicing before the interview, one suggestion is to video-record yourself and then watch back your video to improve your presentation.
- Try to pay attention to the interviewer’s cues and provide the appropriate level of detail and specificity.
- Avoid restating the same information in different ways.
- Focus on giving specific examples that highlight your skills and experience relevant to the position.
- Remember that the interviewer is trying to learn about you, so make sure your communication style reflects positively on you.
Spotlight on Interviewing: Strategies to Stand Out
- Be on time. Try to arrive at least 5 minutes ahead of the set interview time—more if you need to complete paperwork or prepare. If you’re going to be late ever, kindly communicate to the hiring team.
- Dress to impress! Dress for the interview by being neat and tidy. You can never go wrong with a business suit/jacket.
- This is your opportunity to shine! Be prepared to speak to your skills and experience.
- Do your best to remember the interviewer’s name(s) and use them to respond and engage in the conversation. Be sure to use titles like “Doctor” or “Ms” if that is how they were introduced to you.
- Take notes with your phone or a pen/paper.
- After the interview, remember to send a ‘Thank you’ note for their time to interview you, and let them know if you’re still interested in the role.
